Buildings collapse and residents live in fear as massive earthquake sends ominous aftershocks
The Istanbul Governor's Office issued a statement, saying: "The earthquake was felt in the provinces of Manisa, İzmir, Uşak, and Bursa. To date, a total of seven aftershocks exceeding magnitude 3.0 have occurred."
A magnitude 6.8 earthquake was recorded in the Beaus region on Monday morning, according to seismic data reviewed manually by authorities. The quake struck at 7:38 a.m. local time (12:38 UTC) at a shallow depth of less than 30 kilometers, centered at latitude 16.54°N and longitude 59.49°W.
At least 20 people died and 643 others were injured after the tremors, deputy spokesman for Afghanistan's National Disaster Management Authority said
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) said the quake struck at a depth of 24 km. Earlier, the German Research Center for Geosciences (GFZ) had put the magnitude of the quake at 6.4.
